Reflections on Coaching and Consulting in 2005-6 from Barry Curnow, Associate of the Coaching Practice

Barry was Chairman of ICMCI The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes from 2003-5 after eight years on its Executive Committee. He led and negotiated the entry of China into the global consulting community of ICMCI on 1 June 2005.  This took two years of  due diligence. It followed an historic Working Meeting in Vancouver in October 2004 when representatives from “all the Chinas”  ­­­-­­- China, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong sat and worked together at the same table.

October 2005 saw him in China to hand over the chairmanship after his period of office and in Shanghai where he was joint Chair of the World Management Forum cum Fourth China Consulting Summit in Shanghai attended by 600 participants and opened by the Mayor of Shanghai (see http://finance.sina.com.cn/roll/20050919/17241979632.shtml -fast forward to 01.08 to skip the Chinese ceremonial) Barry then chaired the 10th ICMCI biennial Congress in Beijing 20-22 September and presented certificates to the first thirty Certified Management Consultants in China

At Cass Business School, City University, where he is Visiting Professor in Management Consulting Barry re-launched the Brainstrust Workshops, leading edge professional development workshops for coaches, trusted business advisers and their clients. He continued as a Visiting Professor at Durham University Business School where he teaches on the consulting elective for MBA students

Barry was Consulting Editor for four editions of European and China Management Perspectives, quarterly business magazines focused on knowledge exchange and technology transfer between Europe and China published by The Cavendish Group under the Merchant China brand imprint.

As a trustee and Council member of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations he is participating in the project to refresh the intellectual traditions of the Institute in preparation for the forthcoming 60th anniversary.

Through The City Centre for Charity Effectiveness he is providing team coaching in marketing and business development to wpf Counselling and Psychotherapy a large and well known psychotherapy and counselling services and training provider.

He continues to coach the Managing Partners of several professional services firm, the Head of School of a leading University and following his visit to Russia in July 2005 has recently been coaching both a leading US Multinational and their change management consultants on organisation development consulting in Russia, in conjunction with his colleagues in Moscow.

Barry values his association with the Coaching Practice for the colleague interchange and professional frameworks and supervision that it provides.
